About the Artist John grew up in Sunnyvale California, the youngest of eight children in a family of Hispanic and Yokut Indian Heritage. He has always expressed himself through art. As a small boy, he spent time drawing and doing things with his hands. In grade school and college he was the first to sign up for art classes of any kind. He has worked in pencil, charcoal, stain glass, and furniture design, even crafting a chair for himself to draw in. Despite his love of art, John only began painting in watercolors four years ago. While taking a few classes in Santa Cruz, where he lives, John is mostly self- taught. He tries to paint daily, and takes on going classes with well-known artists such as Kay Duffy in Saratoga. He has also studied with Sally Jorgensen, Bill Fravel, and Linda Lord of Santa Cruz and taken workshops with Sylvia Miller of Santa Rosa. John's natural talent has made his progress rapid, and he has shown his art in exhibitions of the Los Gatos Art Association, where his work won honorable mention with his first entry, and third place in watercolor for his second. John believes that the learning process continues through constant involvement. He has drawn portraits in pencil and charcoal, and his watercolors have progressed in such a short amount of time through his personal experience. He loves to garden when he’s not painting, and his beautiful flower and vegetable garden has provided inspiration for his work, as have his travels throughout California. He has painted numerous works on commission. His trips to Spain and France have provided further subjects, from the windmills of La Mancha to the centuries-old bridge connecting the two parts of the southern Spanish town of Ronda. John also works as a hairstylist in Los Altos and Santa Cruz and shows most of his artwork in the Salon “Shear Elegance,” where he sells and shares his work with his clientele. Shows: Current
